Having just watched the new version of Alice in Wonderland, it struck me how similar these two stories are - at least in the movies.

Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland in 1865 and Alice Through the Looking Glass in 1871. And since Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz in 1900, it would seem to me that his insiration would have been AIW. Very similar are the stories of Harry Potter. Many inspirations are familiar in the HP stories. And since Rollings was telling her children bedtime stories, I think her characters and stories can be traced to stories with which she had grown up.

In any case, all the stories are wonderful. But the classic still remains the original - thank you Lewis Carroll.

I also thought of these similarities after seeing Tim Burtons make of Alice In Wonderland, the last scene when Alice came out of the rabbit whole..back to the wedding scene. When I was watching Dark Side of The Rainbow, it reminded me of when Dorthy woke from her dream and saw people from her dream she had, like the man who played the scare crow being her uncle. Just how Alice saw people that were in her dream...hope that makes some seance.

I just saw the Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland and was amazed by the parallels I saw with the movie The Wizard of Oz. I am now curious about the influence that one author may have had on the other. In searching the web I came across this blog. You delineated even more comparisons than I recognized in the film.

Thanks, Annie! I'm not sure what it was that first made me think of the connection between the two. Maybe it was seeing the scene where Dorothy is caught up in the tornado and watches things and people go by. That might be what first reminded me of Alice, and then the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how many parallels there are.
